Message Board of the Damned

FOUNDER: David Wilbanks

URL: www.lostdamned.com

FOUNDED IN: April 2004

MAIN INTERESTS: Discussion of books, film, comics, writing and more in horror and related genres

Started by author and editor, David T. Wilbanks, Message Board of the Damned (MBOTD for short) is an online home for horror lovers, including fans and writers - both published and aspiring. While horror fiction may be the uniting theme of MBOTD, members eagerly branch out in their discussions to related genres, such as science fiction, crime stories and western. Regarding the range of member tastes, moderator h3yd00 says: "The members here are very well read, and know a lot about all genres. I get plenty of advice on books around here, that's for sure."

Indeed the destination forum at MBOTD is The Book Den, where an active literary discussion keeps visitors up-to-date on both small press gems and well-known bestsellers. MBOTD also hosts lively forums for the discussion of film, tv, art, comics and music. Wilbanks, himself, hosts discussion for writers of horror and related genres in the Writers' Talk forum. Author Nickolas Cook hosts live chats with published horror writers at MBOTD Monday evenings. Published writers also regularly join in on discussion. Horror fans will find such a variety of discussions and topics, that they are sure to feel at home. The board is well moderated, keeping flaming at bay, but - as member eldritch00 describes it - "no one feels constrained: posts range from the welcome silly (as opposed to the obnoxious kind) to the mind-numbingly serious." MBOTD members are loyal, tight-knit group, and many credit MBOTD with creating a rare sense of belonging.

How happy is your ending?

Author: Nik Posted: Tue Dec 28, 2010 7:25 pm I prefer upbeat endings providing they're the logical conclusion of the story's arc, not a 'deux ex machina' or equivalent , eg a 'with a leap, he was free'... It's the little things, sometimes: Saving the galaxy is hard to keep... read more

Story Cross-Pollination

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 12:27 pm It depends how fgar into a story I am; the further in, the less I will be inclined to work on something else. If I am headed for the final climax, I won't want to work on or start anything else until I am done. Mainly I... read more

Character Development, on the page or off?
09/07/2010

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 12:11 pm It varies with how centrally the character's role is to the story. For important characters, I usually start out with a general concept of the type of person the character is. Sort of like archetypes; not in the sense of role... read more

Talent or Practice?
09/07/2010

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 11:32 am That question is raised on just about any subject. In my leadership classes, the question is often posed as to whether leadership is an inborn trait or learned. My answer here is the same as my answer there. evryone has... read more

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 11:01 am Hi Vio, You were always good at coming up with great questions. In reference to Queen's "con" (or is it Qota for short?) the writing really shouldn't have anything that doesn't forward the story line. (And before you... read more
