When I set out to write a profile of the Frameshift community, member R Urell warned me: "Sounds a bit like herding cats, writing a comprehensive profile of this lot." I've come to believe that the best way to profile the diverse and witty Frameshift community is to let its members speak for themselves. Indeed, what makes Frameshift most unique is probably the sum of its voices. Regulars include some of the most ingenious, and controversial, young writers in alternative reality fiction, including Matthew Stover, Scott Lynch and R. Scott Bakker. SF critics and reviewers also frequent the board, including Urell, Jay Tomio, and Gabe Chouinard.

"Our guiding general theme," says member RHowse, "is 'literature of the fantastic, or fantastic literature,' from a reading, writing, and criticism angle. However, this is a very loose guideline. Most of us are interested in the why's and wherefore's of pretty much everything." Doug Gogerty describes the breadth of discussion on Frameshift by noting that topics freely branch off in new directions, such as "a deep philosophical discussion of various economic systems or length of one's nose hair." The consensus among members seems to be that honesty, sometimes brutal, of discussion and wit is what makes Frameshift a sought-out destination. "What makes this better than other boards," says sciborg2, "there's a certain level of honesty I suppose. Subject matter isn't censored and you can generally discuss whatever you want." Stover remarks, "You can come here and say what you think. And people will disagree with you, and you can shout back and forth about it as loud as you want." Member baylen has this advice for prospective members: "This can be a great place for discussion, and a great place to learn about the larger world of speculative fiction. Expect to be smacked down on occassion... but you'll find that there's a lot of things to learn."

Long-time member Shevchyk describes what keeps drawing him back to Frameshift: "It's nice to come home at the end of the day to a board filled with some wit, snark, and genuine respect." Frameshift is certainly not a board for the timid, but it's an excellent home on the web for thoughtful literary discussion, great book recommendations, philosophical debate and convivial satire of literature, the world and the self. "What to expect [at Frameshift]?" muses baylen. "Honest answers to honest questions. Intellect and passion fighting for art. Debates, hilarity, violent and physically impossible threats, and shared hatred for utter bullshit."

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 12:27 pm It depends how fgar into a story I am; the further in, the less I will be inclined to work on something else. If I am headed for the final climax, I won't want to work on or start anything else until I am done. Mainly I... read more

Character Development, on the page or off?
09/07/2010

Author: mephisto Posted: Tue Sep 07, 2010 12:11 pm It varies with how centrally the character's role is to the story. For important characters, I usually start out with a general concept of the type of person the character is. Sort of like archetypes; not in the sense of role... read more
