The favourite genre topic got me thinking about the reading I've done in other genres, and what it has taught me. For example,I mentioned that I spent a summer reading nothing but Louis Lamour westerns. While I havern't read one in a long time, what still sticks with me was Lamour's ability to sketch a scene for his reader with a few well chosen sentences, so unlike the overwrought prose that seems to be sadly in the ascendant these days. I still make a concious effort to get the most information to the reader in the most economical way in my own writing.
I was wondering if anyone else has an example of inspiration or technique drawn from outside the speculative fiction genre?
