PostTry this Opener! (11/08)

How does this opener strike you?

"Life wasn't always so dead for me. And I do mean dead, literally. Been dead now for quite some time. Can't remember how long but it's suffice to say I'm really and most truly dead.

Things could be worse I suppose. Might have been running away from destiny's trail trying to stomp off the fire from hell's gates as my father chose to do.

No, I like it here. But before I describe to you where 'here' is and how I ended up 'here', let me introduce myself. "

If you've never read this book, or had no clue where the opener comes from, then how does it strike you? If you had only this opener to go on, would you read more? Does it grab you and spur you to read on? Or does it leave you unenthusiastic?

If you read the book it came from, did you remember right away or did you have to look it up? What made it so memorable - or not so memorable?

Zombies! I haven't read the book, but in my younger days I would probably pick this up. Actually, it almost sounds like "Spawn" which I did enjoy.

This opener carries the possibility for an interesting voice. But it also displays some cliched elements. I wonder how they would play out, whether the intrigue of the voice would win out over the cliche. In other words, I'm on the fence.

It's undistinguished writing IMHO. Like Vio says, there's some cliched elements there and the prose style is a little sophomoric.

Sophomoric in what ways?
