We at ARWZ compiled this list back in April 2001.

So what do you think of our list? Did our members back in 2001 vote accurately? Who would you add? Who would you take away? What did we get right? What did we get wrong?

Top Ten Fantasy Authors Publishing Today

1. George R.R. Martin

2. Guy Gavriel Kay

3. Terry Pratchett

4. Tad Williams

5. Terry Brooks

6. Gene Wolfe

7. Tim Powers

8. Phillip Pullman

9. Terry Goodkind

10. Robert Jordan

My current top 10 fluctuates a lot, but I only agre writh one on yhat list. Here is who I enjoy (in no order)

M. John Harrison
Gene Wolfe
China Mieville
Lucius Shepard
Jeffrey Ford
Jeff Vandermeer
Kelly Link
Graham Joyce
Michael Moorcock
Catherynne M. Valente (fast riser)

Furthermore I think Goodkind, Jordan and Brooks are among the worst authors I have ever read in fiction.

As usual, I didn't vote in that list (in the hopes of keeping it neutral), and so I consequently didn't vote for any of those. It was a comparatively small group at the time, so pet interests got pushed easily to the forefront.

I've been considering the possibility of re-doing the two old lists now that we have a larger voting population from which to draw. What do you folks think? Is this list worth redoing?

I would be all for re-doing this list. It is now 5 years later and maybe more people will submit their thoughts on current authors?

I think it would be good to redo the old lists, too. We only do three lists a year, though, so I'm not sure how soon we can work it in.
