How does this opener strike you?

There had been no reprieve for reality. It remained in abeyance.

The night-time city was smothered by a dense fog that choked sound but only dimmed the constant discharge of magic. The gleam of sorcery pulsed and sparkled. Phantasms were on the wing, apparitions walked abroad.

If you've never read this book, or had no clue where the opener comes from, then how does it strike you? If you had only this opener to go on, would you read more? Does it grab you and spur you to read on? Or does it leave you unenthusiastic?

If you read the book it came from, did you remember right away or did you have to look it up? What made it so memorable - or not so memorable?

If you are interested to read on, then do a search on the opening line and tell us what it is.

I'd probably read a little further to see what kind of phantasms and apparitions we're talking about.

I have a slight problem with the second sentence. There's a fog... it's dimming magic, but then in the very next sentence it says that the sorcery gleams and sparkles. Huh?

I think that the first sentence definitely has its pluses. The second part, though, leaves me a little disappointed.
