I agree it's an enjoyable book, but the same story could've been told just as effectively in half as many pages without all the needless introspection and weighty and ultimately pointless narrative.
There are no surprises in this book either. Fitz, and everyone else in the book, behave as you'd expect.
It's a warm comfortable read that doesn't push boundaries.
Anyone looking for a good old-fashioned fantasy adventure will enjoy this protagonist-centered coming-of-age tale.
This from Violanthe, long-time disparager of coming-of-age tales? Seriously, though, why do you normally dislike them, but love this one?
Read carefully. Do I say I love it? I give credit where credit is due, and as coming-of-age tales go, this one deserves a lot of credit. But I didn't love it. However, I would recommend it to people who do like coming-of-age tales. _________________ Violet "Violanthe" Kane

Yes! You're the first person to agree with me on this. Hobb is the second most popular fantasy writer here. While I don't dislike her, I'm not wild about her either and sometimes I'm left wondering what other Finnish fantasy readers see in her books. Now I've come to realize that I just don't have the Finnish taste in reading.
I think she's pretty popular here, too. I can see what fantasy readers like about her. But I don't know if I'll continue reading this trilogy. I may jump ahead to her more recent trilogies and see what they're like _________________ Violet "Violanthe" Kane
