Here's our review on ARWZ of Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay

You can read the review here:

So, has anyone read this book? Do you agree or disagree with the review? Have you read any other titles by this author? What's your take on those?

I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it this, the fionvar tapestry and arbonne are my favourite novels by this author. The speculative history stuff isn't to my taste at all.

What about the speculative history turns you off?

Its not as creative as when an author builds a world from the foundations up.

Having said that Arbonne which i enjoyed was basically medieval Spain. I also remember when someone pointed out to me that the world of crown of stars by Kate Elliot was geographically Europe .

I would disagree. I think it's an amazingly creative challenge to blend fiction with real-life research.

I think you would find that Lions of Al-Rassan or Sarantine Mosaic read very much like Arbonne or Tigana. They all share the same GGK essence. When you read them, it feels like reading a fantasy and not like a historical.

Sorry Vio when i was taking about the novel that resembled Medieval Spain and the Reconquesta i obviously meant the Lions of Al-Rassam rather than Arbonne.

Well, Lions of Al-Rassan has probably the least magic of all his novels. If you like that one, you'd probably like the other fant-historicals just as well.
