PostTry this Opener! (11/01)

Does this opening line ring a bell? Can you guess from reading it which author wrote it or which book it came from? If so, don't leave us in suspense! Tell us where it's from.

"The road southwest from Cairo was not paved."

Second, if you read the book it came from, did you remember right away or did you have to look it up? What made it so memorable - or not so memorable?

If you've never read this book, or had no clue where the opener comes from, then how does it strike you? If you had only this opening line to go on, would you read more? Does it grab you and spur you to read on? Or does it leave you unenthusiastic?

Call me crazy, but I'm a sucker for stuff about Egypt. This first line would certainly make me want to investigate this book further.

At Midnights Horus Feast by L. P. Stanley

I'm also a sucker for Egypt. Although I haven't read this one I've added it to my 10K to-read-list.

Here's an excerpt of the book:

No. For some reason Egyptian books aren't on the shelves here. Even Elizabeth Peters' books are hard to find and I have to order them on-line.

Hmmm. It seems that he doesn't have anything else published. I'm so used to series that I just assumed that he had.

Also, it seems that it's only available as an e-book.

Hmm.... I'm not a fan of e-books.
