PostAuthor Interviews: Your Suggestions Please

Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2006 1:30 pm

We're in the process of organizing our interview schedule for the upcoming year. This includes contacting authors we've already read and doing the background reading for authors we're interested in.

As ARWZ visitors and readers, your opinions also figure in. Especially since we invite interviewed authors to participate in Q&A's here on the forums.

Which authors would you like to see interviewed on ARWZ?

Now, is Stephen King within your power to procure?

I'm not liking our odds for Stephen King. Besides, we need to build up an extensive interview archive before we can hope to score the big names.

That said, we did score a major coup this summer in getting an interview with Guy Gavriel Kay (interview to be published this January).

And Tolkien won't be available either... being dead and all...

Hmmmmmm...

We could always fall back on me.

Or we can use yourself, right? You've got... what... four or five books?

I've also got a contact I can look into... she published a fantasy novel a few years ago and is working on a sequel... I'll see if I can find her and see if she's interested.

That's the key, Magus - published. If you have a novel-writing friend who has published fantasy, by all means. In fact, you should consider doing an interview yourself.

Johnnycab, where would you suggest one start reading with Ian Irvine?

A Shadow on the Glass is his first fantasy book, and the first in the The View from the Mirror quartet.

He's written some eco-terrorism books too, though I got 20 pages into the first one and decided it was rubbish.

So, I'd start with A Shadow on the Glass.

My library only has his terrorism stuff, so I've requested that they order the fantasy book you recommended.

She's self-published, does that count?

However, she does have some VERY interesting stories about it, drew a whole bunch of artwork for it herself, and I believe is even making a movie based on it (being a director by trade).

If you're the one doing the leg-work, self-published is okay. But we recently had to stop accepting self-published books for review. They were clogging up our reading schedule and they aren't good revenue generators for the magazine (people tend to shy away from buying books that are self-published).

I'll second Mary Gentle. She has such a misleading name.

Where would you two recommend I start with Mary Gentle? What are the essential books for getting an idea of her range?

I'd have to suggest Golden Witchbreed for Mary Gentle. It's often quoted as her keystone book.

Oh. I just remembered: Gary Wassner. He's published three books in his series, GemQuest (The Twins, The Shards and The Awakening), has written the fourth and is working on the fifth. I haven't personally read naything by him, but everybody who has can't stop going on about how good he is. He's a member of another website that I help moderate, and friends with a number of people their (despite a recetn haitus). His website, if you're interested, is here, and you can contact him here.

I could do the leg-work, too, if you'd rather; it's no problem.

Laughing

I just saw your review of The Twins...

Laughing

Rather good timing on my part, then.

Actually, Gary Wassner is already in the ARWZ system. Our reviewer Andrea Johnson (Dagny on the forums) is reviewing his GemQuest series, and we're going to have him on the forums for a Q&A in April when GemQuest #4 comes out.

That said, anyone who is a regular poster here on the forums and would be interested in doing some "leg-work" to get their favorite authors on ARWZ are most welcome to email me with ideas and proposals. "Leg-work" entails writing a few reviews of the author for publication on ARWZ, approaching the authors about an interview with the option for a Q&A, and then doing the interview, usually over email. Interviewing authors is one of the most fun projects on the magazine, and I've found that most authors are very approachable.

So, if anyone would be interested in doing reviews with the possibility (or not, just reviews are fine, too) of doing an interview, let me know. My email as always is [email protected]

I'd like to suggest Matthew Hughes. You reviewed his book Black Brillion back in July. As a short story writer, he is very popular at F&SF, and he just had a short story collection come out. He has another novel scheduled for next year. He's also very approachable. He has been known to hang out on the Jack Vance board as a fan.

Or if you prefer a more historical slant, try Ash - a Secret History. For something completely different (to coin a phrase), read Grunts! But Golden Witchbreed was the one that first grabbed me.

I'm one step ahead of you. I just finished an interview with Matt, and we're looking to schedule a Q&A sometime soon.

What about author's of nonfiction that relates to "alternitive reality" fiction? It's been a while since I've been in contact with these people, but I'm pretty sure that I can swing Rocky Wood, David Rawsthorne and Norma Blackburn, authors of three editions of The Complete Guide to the Works of Stephen King and Stephen King: UNcollected, Unpublished. They themselves do a lot of interviews, so I'm sure that they wouldn't mind being part of one, and they're always out to favorably promote King.

But these are people who really know their stuff. They uncovered a number of "lost" King short stories while doing research at the University of Maine. Also, in the University of Maine, there's the only copy of King's "unpublishable" novel, Sword in the Dark, which is only accesible with written permission from King himself, and they got it, too.

Mostly, the work was done by Rocky Wood, by large, but the rest all did enough work to get co-authoring slots.

I,ve just thought of another - I'd love to hear Tod McCaffrey on collaboration with his mother, and the problems (if any) thereto.

Those types of nonfiction folks would be great. If you want to do an interview, we'd certainly be interested to publish it.

pyanfaruk - which novel's of Tod McCaffrey's have you read. I wasn't too interested in the one novel I read by Anne McCaffrey (I'm assuming that's his mother that you reference):
