I'm having trouble with this one, Golophin. Even googling didn't bring any good results.

I haven't read the book and don't have a copy, but I will guess it is Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb.

I tried googling it again and THIS TOPIC came up as the best match.

Can you give us any clues to point us in the right direction?

Still no luck. Fantasy, scifi, horror?

Hmm... those parameters are just difficult to search. I'd don't quite know how to approach it.

Hm. According to Wikipedia Monarchies of God is a five part series, not a trilogy, and the first book was published in 1995. The other three books are stand alones.

However, is it Hawkwood's Voyage?

That's not the first line of Hawkwood's Voyage listed on Amazon. They show a different one.
