Be it a historical figure, a celebrity, or somebody local, have you ever written a real life person into a fictional story? Is this a good idea or something to be avoided?

Unless the characters are used exactly in context, preferably in a documented context, you could be borrowing trouble...

What about putting someone in completely out of context? Like George Washington in a SciFi story?

I haven't read many such stories but don't alternative history stories use real people quite often?

Yes, alternate history stories use real historical figures quite often.

What about people from your own life? Ever put them in a story?
