The trend among fantasy novels today is to write endless epic series. Which of these should we steer clear of? Which ones lead us down a futile path?

Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series a good story buried under endless minutae about his creation which the author thinks the reader finds as interesting as he does. Personally i didnt and eventually gave up on this one. An example of fully realised not always being a good thing.

Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth Series. Repugnant ideas and philosophy dont encourage him.

Kevin J Andersons Saga of the Seven Suns. Here its an interesting idea poorly executed. in this case its characters in the far future who are just 20th century characters in fancy dress.

I will come back to this one.

Frank Herbert's Dune series. The first book is a masterpiece, IMHO, but they get progressively worse. Fully-realised and well-developed, but...

Philip Jos Farmer's Ringworld series. Again, the first book, To Your Scattered Bodies Go is a work of genius, but the great premise he promises in that book never quite reaches the giddy heights it should over the course of the remainder of the books. They end up being bio's of famous people, really.

I second noGoodkind. I haven't (yet) stumbled on a series as repugnant as that one.

Otherwise I guess it's up to what you don't want to read. If you don't want to read cliches, don't read Eragon, Wheel of Time, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance.

If you don't want to read bad writing, don't read Eragon, Pern, Salvatore's Drizzt books.

That's exactly what I've always heard about Dune. And so I read the first novel but didn't continue.

You could probably pick up "children of Dune" aswell without hurting yourself too badly. But, yeah, it does go downhill pretty fast.

I've been tempted to pick up Wheel of TIme on audio (at least the first book) to see what all the fuss is about, both positive and negative fuss.

Farmer's was Riverworld. It just, um, ran into the sand...

Niven / Pournelle was Ringworld. IMHO, that series went a bit turgid. Still stood head & shoulders above most of the rivals, though...
