Worlds that Weren't by Harry Turtledove, et al Posted: Tue Aug 28, 2007 3:41 pm
How does this opener strike you?
SIMON the shoemaker's shop stood close to the southwestern corner of the Athenian agora, near the boundary stone marking the edge of the market square and across a narrow dirt lane from the Tholos, the round building where the executive committee of the Boul met. Inside the shop, Simon pounded iron hobnails into the sole of a sandal. His son worked with an awl, shaping bone eyelets through which rawhide laces would go. Two grandsons cut leather for more shoes.
If you've never read this book, or had no clue where the opener comes from, then how does it strike you? If you had only this opener to go on, would you read more? Does it grab you and spur you to read on? Or does it leave you unenthusiastic?
If you read the book it came from, did you remember right away or did you have to look it up? What made it so memorable - or not so memorable? _________________ Violet "Violanthe" Kane

Goes to show there's a time to break the rules !!!
Um, it isn't my usual 'period', but I'd happily read the rest of the page to see where it goes.

It sets the time and location very well. Simon is obviously an honest craftsman. It catches my interest.
I'd also read the rest of the page.

Greek setting with a character with a Hebrew name. Intriguing. I'd read on.
